Anoperationalstressinjury(OSI)isanypersistentpsychologicaldifficultyresultingfromoperationaldutiesperformedduringmilitaryorRCMPservice.Itincludesarangeofhealthproblemssuchasanxietydisorders,depressivedisorders,substanceuseandPost-TraumaticStressDisorder(PTSD)aswellasotherconditionsthatmaybelesssevere,butstillinterferewithdailyfunctioning.

Manyexperiencescancauseoperationalstress.Althoughactivecombatiscertainlyoneofthem,therearemanyothereventsthatarepartoftheriskofservinginthemilitaryorRCMPthatcancausesuchinjuries.Takingpartinsearch-and-rescueoperations,beinginvolvedinatrainingaccident,handlinginjuredbodies,witnessingcivilianatrocitiesorbeinginvolvedinciviliandisasteraidcanallcausemoderatetoseverestressreactions.Whentheseexperiencesinterferewithaperson'slife,theresultisanoperationalstressinjury.

AnOSIcanaffectothersintheperson'slife,leadingtomaritalandfamilyproblems.OSIscanalsoproducephysicalsymptomssuchasstomachupset,headaches,andsleepproblems,andtheycanmakechronicpainproblemsworse.

CanadahasanetworkofspecializedclinicsdesignedtosuccessfullytreatoperationalstressinjuriesofveteransandRCMP.Theclinicsarecommittedtofourkeyareas-assessment,treatment,networkingandresearchinitseffortstounderstandandsuccessfullytreatclientsandtheirfamilieswhohaveoperationalstressinjuries.

Eachclinichasadedicatedprofessionalteamthatincludespsychiatrists,psychologists,socialworkers,mentalhealthnurses,andotherspecializedclinicians.Theyusetheirknowledgeofthemilitaryandpoliceculturestodeveloppersonalizedtreatmentplansincollaborationwitheachclient.Thespouseandclosefamilymemberscanalsobeinvolvedinthetreatmentprocess.

Throughthisspecializedtreatment,clientsaddressdifficulties,developtreatmentobjectives,findresources,andimprovetheirqualityoflife.Whilecontinuingtoliveintheircommunity,clientsattendperiodicappointmentsattheOSIclinicexceptfortheresidentialandinpatientstabilizationtreatmentprograms.

Inadditiontoclinicalassessment,clientsareofferedavarietyoftreatmentoptionsincludingindividualtherapies,groupsessions,psycho-educationsessionsandaccesstootherresources.Clientsmaybereferredtoanaddictiontreatmentcentreforspecializedcounsellingservicesifalcoholdependency,substanceabuse,orgamblingdifficultiesrequiremoreintensivetreatment.

ClientsmustbereferredtooneoftheOSIClinicsbyVeteranAffairsCanada,CanadianForcesorRCMP.
